Abstract
Writing is widely regarded as the most cognitively demanding of the four English language skills, and EFL learners in Indonesian senior high schools often struggle with idea development, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics, compounded by low motivation toward conventional, teacher-centered writing tasks. This paper is a conceptual, literature-based study that examines how Canva, a free web-based graphic design platform, can be applied as a media tool to support English writing instruction at the senior high school level in Indonesia. Drawing on Mayer's (2009) Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and Richards and Rodgers' (2014) Communicative Language Teaching framework, the paper synthesizes existing empirical studies on Canva-based writing instruction, identifies a persistent gap in that literature concerning genre generalizability and underreported practical limitations, and proposes a structured pedagogical model covering preparation, implementation, and assessment stages. The discussion also compares Canva with alternative digital tools such as Google Slides and Microsoft Word, and explicitly addresses Canva's limitations, including internet dependency, a restricted free-tier template library, and the absence of built-in grammar feedback. The paper argues that when applied with clear pedagogical purpose and adequate scaffolding, Canva can improve EFL learners' writing by providing authentic communicative purpose, visual scaffolding for text organization, and a collaborative environment for drafting and revision, provided teachers plan for and mitigate its documented constraints.
