Abstract

This study analyses the plot in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped using the plot theory proposed by M.H Abrahms. The study focuses on how events in the novel are arranged through a sequence of casually related incidents that build a unified narrative. This research employs a qualitative research method with an objective approach. The primary data source is the Novel Kidnapped, the data consisted of narrations and dialogues that represent significant in the story. The secondary data are obtained from books, journals, and other relevant academic sources. The data were collected through close reading, note taking, classifying plot related events, and interpreting the findings based on the selected theories. The findings indicate that Kidnapped employs a progressive (Linear) plot consisting of five stages: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. The exposition introduces David Balfour as the protagonist and establishes the setting and initial conflict. The rising action develops through David’s journey, his betrayal by Ebenezer Balfour, and his adventure with Alan Breck Stewart. The climax occurs when David and Alan struggle to escape from government soldiers in the Scottish Highlands. The falling action depicts the gradual resolution of the conflicts, while the resolution concludes with David reclaiming his rightful inheritance. The study concludes that the well-structured plot enhances narrative coherence, builds suspense, and effectively conveys the themes of courage, justice, loyalty, and perseverance.
