Abstract

This study is about the use of write-around strategy in improving students’ writing skill of recount text of eight grade at SMPN 56 Surabaya in the academic year of 2019/2020. The problem on their writing activity are on how they generating ideas and arranging the sentences. They were also weak on their grammatical and vocabulary, especially on their adjective and verb. They got low score because there were a lot of mistakes on their writing. This research was conducted to find out that with write-around strategy can improve students’ writing skill of recount text. In this research I used classroom action research with two cycles. Before conducted the first cycle, the researcher gave a pre-test to get the first writing score. The cycle was conducted in two days with treatments using write-around strategy to improve their writing skill, and also gave a test to get their improvement score. In cycle two, there were two meetings for treatment and a test. The students writing skill improved in all aspect, from their grammar, vocabulary, content, and spelling. It could be seen on their score that shows improvement on each test. Based on the results, it can be concluded that write-around strategy could help students in improving their writing skill of recount text. There was an improvement on their writing skill. The students’ writing improved on all aspects, from grammar, content, vocabulary, and spelling. It is suggested that write-around strategy is an appropriate strategy to use in teaching writing.
