Abstract

Yaoi phenomenon as one of the LGBT-proliferating media is currently deemed as a massive phenomenon targeting various age groups, including teenagers. Male teenagers, who like Yaoi genre, are commonly called fudanshi. This study aimed at investigating the underlying factors of fudanshi’s preference towards Yaoi movies and readings as well as how fudanshi group interprets the behavior of watching and reading Yaoi-related stuffs. This study is a qualitative study that employed a phenomenological approach. The research was conducted in Surabaya with five fudanshi persons as informants. Data collection process comprised participative observation, interview and in-depth documentation. Then, the data were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman's framework theory. The results of this study indicated that there are two underpinning factors of fudanshi’s fancy towards Yaoi movies and reading, which are the fascinating homoerotic element and anti-mainstream romance story. Yaoi presents sex scenes that causes sexual arousal, contains elements of struggle in maintaining relationships with partners, includes humor aspect in self-conflict and the process of expressing love to the counterpart and provides many life messages that seem applicable in everyday life. Yaoi is able to make fudanshi have imaginative view of one’s romance life. Fudanshi interprets the behavior of watching and reading Yaoi as a medium to satisfy sexual desire, a momentum for gaining affection, as a means of entertainment and discovery of true love story.
