Abstract

Zhytara, Maurelita Divia, 21620014. Politenes Strategies in Prabowo Subianto’s Speech at the St.Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025. Thesis, Department of English Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya University, 2026. One of the important roles in diplomatic communication to help speakers build harmonious solidarity relations, build cooperation between countries, and even avoid conflict or free trade agreements (FTA) when delivering sensitive messages is the politeness strategy. This study’s aim is to identify various types of politeness strategies used by Prabowo Subianto in his speech at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025 and to explain the contribution of these strategies in building diplomatic relations with international audiences. In this study, the author uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data collected and then analyzed using the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987), which divides politeness strategies into four types, namely: Bald on-record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and off-record. The findings show that Prabowo used 57 politeness strategies utterances in total. Including 6 bald on-record, 24 positive politeness, 22 negative politeness, and 5 off-record. Prabowo frequently employs positive politeness strategies. Furthermore, these findings indicate that Prabowo employs positive politeness to build solidarity and gain respect maintain close relationships with international audiences.
