Abstract

This study discussed student’s errors in descriptive writing based on the topic “Gardu Action.” This study used a descriptive qualitative to analyze student descriptive text writing. The data were collected from Descriptive Text written by seven eleventh-grade students on the topic “Gardu Action,” which was taken from students' textbook for grade XI. To support analysis, relevant literature from books, journals, and articles, related to error analysis and descriptive text writing was reviewed. The students made four types of grammatical errors based on linguistics category taxonomy proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982), namely : phonological, morphological, syntactical, and lexical errors. A Total of 33 errors were identified and morphological errors were found to be the most dominant type, accounting 12 students. These errors indicate that students still face difficulties in applying English grammatical rules, vocabulary usage, and sentence structure in descriptive text. Several factors contribute to these errors, such as limited knowledge, first language interference, and lack of writing practice. Error analysis helps students understand their mistakes and improve their writing skill. It is beneficial not only for students, who can recognize their mistakes, but also for teachers to evaluate and improve their teaching strategies. It provides useful information about students’ difficulties, so they can guide and support them better and improve their teaching methods. This study suggests that teachers should give more focus on grammar instruction and grammar practice is needed to improve students’ English writing skills. This study also aims to determine the most dominant errors made by students and provide insights for English writing instruction.
