Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was intended to describe the students’ writing ability at Class X-5 in SMA Hang Tuah 4 Surabaya about five components of writing in procedure text. This research used descriptive qualitative to describe the data of the topic discussed. The researcher used questionnaire and writing test to collect the data. The result of the research showed by writing test, 54% students got upper score in content, 50% students got upper score in organization, 63% students got lower score in vocabulary, 67% students got lower score in language use, and 71% students got lower score in mechanics. Meanwhile, by questionnaire, 39% students answer agree in content, 42% students answer agree in organization, 45% students answer neutral in vocabulary, 50% students answer neutral in language use, 42% students answer neutral in mechanics. So, through writing test more than 50% of students got lower score in vocabulary, language use, and mechanics and through questionnaire, it was also obtained that many students answered neutral and in vocabulary, language use, and mechanics, which means they still do not really understand whether these components are important or not important in writing. It can be concluded that students have difficulties in applying and understanding the components of writing. Thus, the researcher suggests English teacher to provide a good learning motivation for students and has a creative way of delivering the material, so that students can enthusiastically improve their writing skills. For the students, they need to consider the important components of writing and doing a lot of practice to improve their writing. Lastly, for other researchers can make this study as a reference for other studies, other writers can conduct research to improve students' abilities, especially the five components of their writing.
