Abstract

The purpose of the analysis of positive politeness strategy of the characters in ‘Enola Holmes 2’ movie script is to identify what kinds of politeness strategies varieties appearing in the main and supporting characters’ dialogue and to analyze the reason behind the usage of the sentences by the characters. The writer decides to use the movie script and supported by the movie likewise. The method of the research chosen by the characters is descriptive qualitative method. The data is collected from the characters utterances in the movie script which contain politeness strategies. The research collects the data by several steps which are watching the movie, analyzing the movie script, cross-checking whether the utterances match the strategies, and writing down the utterances and the reason behind the usage of the politeness strategies. The data is collected from the movie script analysis implies the usage of the four strategies of politeness strategies, which counted as Bald On Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off Record. The result of the analysis will be written in table form including the dialogue part and the reason why the characters use the strategies. The positive politeness is separated into 15 different varieties where all types of the strategy are found in the dialogue with the total findings 77 dialogues. And although the negative politeness is separated into 10 differential varieties, this finding distinguishes 8 varieties of Negative Politeness applied by the characters with 33 dialogues. Furthermore, the writer also distinguishes the huge amount of Bald On Record findings with 35 dialogues and 11 dialogues which implies the usage of Off Record.
