Abstract

Agustina, Dinda Ramadhani (2026) Discourse Markers in The Jakarta Post Reporting on Indonesian Parliamentary Protests. Thesis of English Education Department. Faculty of Teaching and Education. Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya University. Advisors: 1. Dr. Ribut Surjowati, M. Pd. 2. Diah Yovita Suryarini, S.Sos. M.Pd. This study aimed to identify the types of discourse markers used in The Jakarta Post articles reporting on the Indonesian parliamentary protests and to explain how these discourse markers helped improve readers’ critical awareness. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory was used to classify discourse markers into additive, adversative, causal, and temporal types, while Schiffrin's (1987) theory was applied to explain their functions. The findings showed that 138 discourse markers were identified, consisting of 73 additive, 28 temporal, 27 adversative, and 10 causal markers. The study also found that discourse markers helped readers understand the relationships between ideas, follow the development of events, and interpret political news more critically. Therefore, discourse markers play an important role in creating cohesive and coherent news texts while improving readers’ critical awareness.
