Abstract

Language reflects a big impact on how people of different racial and gender identities interact with each other. This study aims to analyze how language, gender, and multiculturalism are used in the movie Hidden Figures (2016). Focusing on how gender is shown through language and communication, different types of linguistic discrimination and power dynamics, and how the characters use language to fight racial and gender inequality at work in a multicultural setting. Qualitative descriptive methods were used in this work. The data came from the conversations in Hidden Figures, which were collected by observation, documentation, and note-taking techniques. This study looked at how women and men talk using Lakoff’s (1975) and Coates’ (1986) ideas and Fairclough’s (1989) Critical Discourse Analysis. The results show that the female characters use different parts of language depending on the situation and the goal of the communication. The study also finds six types of linguistic discrimination and power dynamics that show how racial and gender inequality exist in the workplace. To fight against unfair practices, the female characters also use language strategically by making logical arguments, stressing the importance of leadership, and backing up their claims with facts. The study comes to the conclusion that language is not only a way to communicate, but also a way to fight against race and gender inequality at work.
