Abstract

Agustin, Rachma 22620009, Prabowo Subianto’s Diplomatic Communication: Unpacking His Politeness Strategies in Al Jazeera Interview. Thesis, Department of English Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Wijaya Kusuma University of Surabaya, 2026. Politeness strategies have an important role in diplomatic communication. They help speakers keep good relationships, reduce possible face-threatening situations, and create a positive image during international communication. In this context, politeness strategies help them express their ideas while keeping their credibility and showing respect to others. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method by applies Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory of politeness strategies as the main framework. The data are Prabowo Subianto’s utterances taken from his interview with Al Jazeera. This research focuses on identifies the politeness strategies used by Prabowo Subianto in his interview with Al Jazeera, explains how these strategies support diplomatic communication, and examines how they contribute to his diplomatic image. The findings show that there are 37 utterances containing politeness strategies used by Prabowo Subianto. They consist of Positive Politeness strategies, Negative Politeness strategies, and Bald on Record strategies. Positive Politeness appears as the most dominant used. This result shows that Prabowo often gives his statements with clear explanations, encourages mutual understanding, and communicates in a respectful way during the interview. The findings indicate that politeness strategies are not only useful for making communication more effective but also help strengthen diplomatic relationships and develop a positive diplomatic image in international media.
