Abstract

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by reduced bone density, followed by a decrease in bone strength and causes bone loss. There are risk factors that cause osteoporosis, including low estrogen levels, lack of physical activity, vitamin D deficiency, smoking and so on. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between age and sex with osteoporosis in Indonesia. The method used in this study is a narrative review. In data recapitulation using DEXA, in a study in Indonesia, the prevalence of osteoporosis at the age of 61-70 years was 32%, while the study in Malaysia found the incidence of osteoporosis at the age of 61-70 years was 21.9%. Then in Indonesia also found the prevalence of women more than men (88% vs 12%), while in Italy the prevalence of women and men with osteoporosis was 51.27% vs 27.91%. In the data recapitulation using QUS, studies in Indonesia found that the incidence of osteoporosis at the age of 36-64 years was 45%, while in India the incidence of osteoporosis at the age of 55-60 years was 36.6%. Then, using QUS also in a study in Indonesia, it was found that the prevalence of osteoporosis in women was more than men (37.5% vs 10%), while a study in India showed the prevalence of osteoporosis in women was 17.25%. From this analysis, it is known that there is a relationship between age and sex with osteoporosis in Indonesia and in several countries in the world. In addition, it is necessary to do prevention and early detection so that it does not continue to fractures that can cause death and prompt treatment. Keywords: age, gender, osteoporosis, in Indonesia.
