Abstract

This research aims at improving the writing skills of the tenth grade students of SMA Hang Tuah 4 Surabaya through picture series. The purpose of the study is to know how picture series can improve the students’ ability in writing recount text. It is expected that the research would be useful for the teachers and students in language teaching and learning process. This study was classroom action research which consist of Planning, Acting, Observing, and Reflecting. This method is done in three cycles in order to get the maximum result of the research. The subjects of the research were 35 students of X IPS 1 at SMA Hang Tuah 4 Surabaya. The results of the research indicated that the use of picture series improved the students’ skills in writing a recount text. The tools of collecting data are writing test, observation checklist, and field notes. In pre-cycle the average score of the students was still far below the passing grade that was only 20% in percentages. Meanwhile, there were 28 students who failed the test, the students’ mean score was 64, in first cycle the average score in the first cycle was 74 higher than the average score in the pre-cycle, there were only 10 students who did not pass the test while there were 25 students passed the test can be concluded that 71% students were successfully passed the test. In second cycle the average score in the second cycle was 77 is above the passing grade. There were only 4 students who failed the test. Meanwhile 31 students successfully passed the test. In other word there were 89% percent of X IPS 1 students who got the score above the passing grade and passed the test. It is suggested that by using picture series as media in teaching writing, the students’ writing skill in recount text was improving. Keywords: Writing Skill, Recount Text, and Picture Series
