Abstract
Streptococcus mutans is a member of the normal flora in humans. Streptococcus mutans is a bacteria that is also often found in caries sufferers. Some of the plants grown in Indonesia can be used as medicinal plants, one of which is the salam plant (Syzygium polyanthum W.). Benefits of salam leaf (Syzygium polyanthum W.) apart from cooking herbs, it can also traditionally be used to treat various diseases such as colic pain medication. Salam plants can also be used by local people to treat strokes, high cholesterol, uric acid, blood circulation, stomach ulcers, and to treat diarrhea. This study aims to determine the effect of giving salam leaf extract (Syzygium polyanthum W.) to the growth inhibition zone of Streptococcus mutans bacteria. The research population used was pure culture bacteria Streptococcus mutans which was used in this study available at the Microbiology Laboratory of the Central Health Laboratory of Surabaya with a sample size of 28 samples taken and repeated 4 times for each treatment group. Data analysis in this study was tested using the One Way ANOVA statistical test. The results showed that the administration of salam leaf extract (Syzygium polyanthum W.) had no effect in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria in vitro.
