Abstract

Learning English is really important in this globalization era, since English is an international language. Motivation is needed in development of the students through learning process, whether the students have motivation or not, it influences their ability (Slameto, 2003). In this research was aimed to improve students’ motivation in learning English at 11th IPA 1 Grade of SMA Hang Tuah 4 Surabaya. The subject of this research was a class consisted of 34 students. The research consisted of two cycles. The object of this research was to improve students’ motivation in learning English by the use of ice breaker strategy. This research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research. The data were collected from observation, interview, and documentation. The findings of this study showed that using ice breakers can improving students’ motivation in learning English because the students more attractive and more pay attention to the teacher during teaching learning process. The students showed enthusiasm in learning English and gave good responses after the use of ice breaker strategy in learning English.
