Abstract

The research is focused on analyzing the conflict in L.J. Smith Stefan's Diaries : The Ripper and focused on analyses the types and resolution of conflicts happened in main characters in the novel. Objective of this research are to find out what kind of conflicts the main characters experiences and how are the resolution of the conflicts. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative method, and source of data analysis has used L.J. Smith Stefan's Diaries : The Ripper which was published in 2011, as primary data analyzed. In collecting data, the writer used textual methods as the instrument to collect data from literary work and used the comprehensive reading and noting as procedures of data collection. This research used the structualism approach theory by Abrams, cited in Nurgiyantoro (2013) as the technique of analyzing data to analysis the types and resolution of conflicts happened in main characters in the novel. Based on the data analysis, the writer found three types of conflict in the main character and also found the conflict resolution skills occur in main character. Types of conflict: in one person and society; within one individual; in two individuals, those conflicts are conflict occurred in Stefan and because his problem in inward life such as regret, emotion, and fear since face the problem of his life within the his society and his own mind, also a conflict occurred in Stefan character between another character, such as faced his conflict about -Jack The Ripper- with his brother, Damon Salvatore. Conflict resolution skills are used emotional capability and communication skill. The implication of this research is to give understanding to reader about the types of the conflict and the conflict resolution skill in main characters in Stefan Diaries : The Ripper. Especially for the students of English and Literature Department, result of this research can be use as reverences to analyze more about conflicts in literary works.
