Abstract
This research aims at finding out whether the use of four square writing strategy improves students’ writing skill at tenth grade students of 12th State Senior High School Surabaya. The method used in this research is classroom action research. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation and tests. The researcher conducted the tests before (diagnostic test) and after (end-cycle test). The mean score of each test was compared to know the students improvements in writing skill. The research result shows the positive improvements in students’ writing skill. The mean score of diagnostic test was 56.82, the end-cycle in cycle 1 was 64.91, and the end-cycle of cycle 2 was 71.36. On the other hand, there were positive improvements of students’ motivation such as the students are more interested with the process of learning. The students pay attention to the teacher’s explanation and teacher’s instruction as the guide to do the task given. The students enjoyed the writing activity.
