Abstract

Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat serious gram negative bacterial infections. Side effects of Gentamicin can induce nephrotoxicity associated with Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) due to acute tubular necrosis. This is related to the formation of free radicals induced by Gentamicin which cause oxidative damage. Red Guava (Psidium guajava L.) contains high antioxidants such as vitamin C 69.6mg/100g which can compensate for free radicals and protect the kidneys from damage. This study aims to analyze the histopathology of white rats’ kidney given red guava fruit flour after administration of Gentamicin. This study was an experimental study using 24 white rats divided into 4 groups. The P0 group was the control group, while the groups P1, P2 and P3 were the treatment group given Gentamicin 60mg/kgBW I.M for 7 days. After being given Gentamicin, P1 group was given aquades P.O, P2 was given red guava fruit flour 1g/kgBW P.O and P3 was given synthetic vitamin C 1g/kgBW P.O, then terminated on day-15. The results showed that red guava flour could reduce the nephrotoxic gentamicin effect seen from tubular epithelial cell necrotic and degeneration lesion (P<0.05), whereas in inflammatory cell infiltration lesions the results were not significantly different (P>0.05).
