Abstract

Writing is important for students because it is needed for everyday communication also in academics. However, lack of student ability to write is caused by various things such as low vocabulary level understanding. Lack of motivation made writing even more difficult. This paper explores how the use of English posters as a teaching medium is able to teach descriptive writing text for students of eleventh grades . As a teaching media poster uses pictures to make students generate ideas, it also helps students use correct sentence structure to describe items, places , or people. Poster can be used to teach descriptive text writing in several ways. First the teacher shows a poster in front of the classroom, then students look at the poster to see its content and identify the important part of the poster for example physical features, characteristic or special part that makes it different from other objects/places/people depending on what pictures are in the poster. Second, the students work as individuals or with their friends as a group to write descriptive text based on what they see. Lastly, students present their writing in front of their class with or without their group. The researcher uses posters because it is easy both for the teacher and the students. For students it helps them generate their ideas. Interesting pictures also help to motivate students.
