Abstract

This study is aimed to improve the reading comprehension of eleventh grade students of SMA Hang Tuah 1 Surabaya in understanding narrative text by using Jigsaw technique. The study was inspired by the absence of interactivity among the students in the learning process and their difficulties in understanding the generic structures and language features of narrative texts. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) method which was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle had four stages: planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The subjects of this research were the eleventh grade students of SMA Hang Tuah 1 Surabaya. Quantitative methods (reading comprehension tests) and qualitative methods (observation sheets and field notes) were used to collect the data. The success was when 75% of the total students met the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM). The results of the study revealed that the Jigsaw technique was effective in enhancing students’ reading comprehension skills. It can be seen that the percentage of students who passed KKM increased from 66.67% in the Preliminary study to 72.22% in Cycle I and finally 83.33% in Cycle II. The final mean score increased to 82.83. Moreover, the results of observations showed that students were more active, motivated and enthusiastic in the teaching and learning process through the cooperation of peer-tutoring. Based on the research findings, the use of Jigsaw technique can improve students’ reading comprehension skill on narrative text at the eleventh grade of SMA Hang Tuah 1 Surabaya.
