Abstract
This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of bajakah tampala root extract (Spatholobus littoralis Hassk.) against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus in vitro and to identify its phytochemical constituents. An experimental laboratory design was employed using the disc diffusion (Kirby-Bauer) method. The extract was tested at concentrations of 20%, 30%, and 40%, with chloramphenicol as a positive control and DMSO as a negative control. The observed parameter was the diameter of the inhibition zone on Mueller Hinton Agar. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The results showed that the bajakah tampala root extract exhibited antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The 30% concentration produced the largest inhibition zone (26,67 ± 3,68 mm), followed by 40% (25,23 ± 2,28 mm) and 20% (19,97 ± 3,99 mm). Statistical analysis indicated a significant difference among treatments (p <0,05). Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids, phenolics, alkaloids, and tannins. In conclusion, bajakah tampala root extract has potential as a natural antibacterial agent, with the effectif concentration at 30%, and may be further developed as an alternative for bacterial infection control.
