Abstract
The aim of this research was to identify the presence of soil transmitted helminths (STH) in orangutan feces at the Surabaya Zoo. In this study, 6 feces samples were taken twice from 6 orangutans at Surabaya Zoo. The method for examining orangutan feces samples used is the floating method using a saturated sugar solution to float STH eggs or parasites. The results of macroscopic examination of orangutan feces at Surabaya Zoo showed normal color, consistency, odor and shape. This study carried out microscopic examination of 6 orangutan feces samples at Surabaya Zoo. Examination showed the absence of STH eggs and worms in all samples. A routine deworming program and good health management are believed to be the determining factors for this outcome. The scoring system and stool characteristics also show normal conditions without any abnormalities. The results of this study indicate that the preventive health and parasite control program at Surabaya Zoo is effective in preventing STH infestation in orangutans. Good health management, including routine deworming, is a key factor in preventing parasitic diseases in wild animals. This research shows that orangutans at Surabaya Zoo are protected from STH infestation thanks to good health management. These results can be used as a reference for developing wild animal health programs in the future. Keywords : Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH), feces, orangutans, parasites, floating method, Surabaya Zoo.
