Abstract

Reading is one of the language skills which is important for academic success. Reading is the process of reconstructing the writer’s idea written in a text or printed symbols based on the reader’s background knowledge and experience. Reading is important skill to help people learn from human knowledge and experience. A herringbone technique is a strategy that develops comprehension of the main idea by plotting who, what, when, where, why, and how question on a visual diagram of a fish skeleton. And then, that herringbone is a kind of technique used in teaching reading process. It is a reading technique that can be applied to improve reading comprehension. There are some reasons for using herringbone technique. First, herringbone technique make students discover how the process read well. Secondly, herringbone technique attracted will read the text. Third, herringbone technique focus on a simple question and more easilyto find the main idea of the text. Besides, herringbone technique can help student organize important information in a text. The objective of the research was to get real evidence of the improving students’ reading comprehension of narrative text through herringbone technique. The technique of this research was classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles. The subject of this research was the VIII Grade of SMP Mabadie Khoiri Ummah (MKU) Surabaya Academic Year 2017/2018 with total number of students 35. The research instruments were the observation sheet, interview guidelines, questionnaire and test form. Based on the results of data analysis since first cycle up second cycle, the average of study result gained in pre cycle with the average value was 29.41%. Whereas in first cycle after applying herringbone technique had enhanced 41.17 %. And the second cycle had enhanced 82.35 %. Based on the learning activities which have occurred the enhancing from the first to second cycle. From this research findings, it showed that herringbone technique could improve the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text.
