Abstract

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a bacterium that is associated with various infections. There are many ways that can be done to treat infectious diseases caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antibiotic that is often used is ciprofloxacin because it is very sensitive in inhibiting the growth of the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In addition, there are also xanthones from mangosteen rind which are known for their antibacterial properties. In a study conducted by Widyaningsih (2017) xanthones can inhibit the growth of M.tuberculosis. Because the mangosteen fruit is easy to find in Indonesia, therefore the researchers wanted to utilize the mangosteen rind, especially the xanthones compound to find out whether there was an effect on the growth of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria and to compare it with ciprofloxacin, using the disc diffusion method. In this study, the independent variable was the xanthones concentration variable (0.015%, 0.03%, 0.06%, 0.12%, 1.25%, 1.5%, 1.75%, 2%) as the treatment group. The dependent variable was the diameter of the bacterial growth inhibition zone and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Control variables were dmso 10% as negative control group, antibiotic ciprofloxacin disc as positive control group, and disc diameter. The data in this study were not analyzed using the SPSS program because the results of the study did not show any inhibition zone for bacterial growth at various concentrations of xanthones. So that there are differences in the activity test of xanthones and ciprofloxacin antibiotics against the inhibition zone of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria.
