Abstract

Diabetes mellitus and its complications are a serious health problem in the world. Moringa Oleifera (MO) tree especially the leaves, have been used as traditional medicine for diabetes mellitus because of the possibility to having antihyperglycemic and antioxidant properties, especially in the liver. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Moringa Oleifera leaf extract on the liver with type two diabetes mellitus and to determine the best dose of Moringa Oleifera leaf extract which can effect on reducing of blood glucose and improvement on liver with type two diabetes mellitus. Data used in this study amounted to 10 references. Based on 10 reference sources, it was found that Moringa Oleifera leaf extract (aqueous, ethanolic/methanolic) can repair damage to the liver as a result of diabetes mellitus induction, in the form: (1) Decreased MDA levels, (2) increased levels of GSH, SOD, Catalase, (3)) decreased levels of LT, AST, GGT, ALP, SGOT, LDL, cholesterol, (4) decreased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the liver, (5) reduced the formation of ROS in hepatic mitochondria, (5) decreased blood glucose levels. Two types of solvents that used on the preference (aqueous, ethanolic/methanolic), was not effect significantly on the results of the study. Keywords: moringa oleifera, diabetes mellitus, liver
