Abstract

Streptococcus pyogenes and Escherichia coli are bacteria that causes infections in the human body. The misused of antibiotics while treating bacterial infections lead to a condition that makes pathogenic microorganisms become resistant. The red onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of natual ingredient that have anti-bacterial potential. The skin peel of Allium cepa L. which lately becomes waste in the environment is currently not being used optimally. The skin peel contain substances called flavonoids, saponins, and tannins that have antibacterial effects. Based on that, the purpose of this research was to determined the effect of potential inhibition of red onion skin peel extract (Allium cepa L.) againts the growth of Streptococcus pyogenes and Escherichia coli used the disc diffusion method. The population in this study were the culture of Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 19615 and Escherichia coli ATCC 8739. Samples of this study were 30 samples. The samples were divided into five groups, three treatment groups and two control group. The treatment group was administered by various concentrations of red onion skin peel extract, concentration of 60%, 65% and 70%. The positive control group was given Chloramphenicol antibiotics and negative control was given by aquadest. The data were taken as the inhibition zone for the growth of Streptococcus pyogenes and Escherichia coli bacteria. The results showed that no inhibition zone was formed in the growth of the two bacteria. The data in this study were not analyzed using the Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) program because there were no inhibition zones formed. The results showed that there was no effect of red onion skin peel extract (Allium cepa L.) on the growth of Streptococcus pyogenes and Escherichia coli, as indicated by the absence of the diameter of inhibition zone that formed.
