Abstract

Social media now is one of the biggest means of communication and obtaining popularity quickly, especially for Millennials. This study surveyed 50 students of the English Education Department at the University of Wijaya Kusuma to find the role of social media in the development of their aspect of learning English. The research method was Qualitative Research that used three instruments, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation to obtain data. The researcher found that there were kinds of social media that frequently used by students, were Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Facebook. Instagram selected by 51% (N: 25) of students that helped them to develop aspect of learning English through the features; 1) photos/videos were provided, 2) like, comment, share and save, 3) connected to all over the world people, 4) stories and filter, 5) IG TV, and 6) exploring/browser page. 32% (N:8) of students spent 2-3 times a day opening Instagram to find English information. The result was Instagram having important roles in the development of student’s aspect of learning English; as a media 1) for English learning visually, 2) to connect students with native speakers, 3) to optimize student’s affective and psychomotor aspects, 4) to implement student’s aspect of learning English, and 5) to develop the student’s English outside the classroom and social media life.
