Abstract

This study wants to give some explanation in teaching speaking in junior high school using gallery walk. Speaking is considered as one of the most important and essential skills that must be practiced to communicate orally. By speaking, people are able to know what kinds of situations the world, are easier to communicate each other. Teaching speaking is activities to promote speaking in English as a foreign language. Teaching speaking is very important part in foreign language learning. The ability to communicate in foreign language clearly and efficiently contributes to the success of the learner in school as well as later in real life. Gallery walk is a discussion technique that gets students out of their chairs and into a mode of active engagement. Gallery walk is a cooperative learning strategy in which the instructor devises several questions/problem at a different table or at different place on the wall- hence the name ‘gallery’. In gallery walk teams rotate around the classroom, composing answers to questions as well as reflecting upon the answers given by other groups. In junior high school, students were many reasons that the students difficulties in speaking. They were less concentration, not interested and look bored in English class. One of ways to help students is applying appropriate technique in the classroom which makes the students interested to start speaking in English is gallery walk technique. Therefore, teacher can use this strategy as an alternative in teaching speaking.
