Abstract

The researcher tries to conduct a study about an error analysis of translation made by tenth grade students of SMK Kawung 2 Surabaya in the academic year of 2019/2020. The purpose of this study is to find any types of grammatical error that the students make on translating recount text from Indonesia language into English. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative as a method to analyze the data. The researcher takes 28 students of the tenth grade of SMK Kawung 2 Surabaya as the sample of his study. In collecting the data, the researcher uses an essay text to test the student ability on translating Indonesia text into English text. Based on the analysis. There are 278 of total errors, 19% of omission error, 5% of addition errors, 1% of miss-ordering errors and 75% of miss-formation errors. The causes of errors that make the students produce errors in this study is reflect the general characteristic of rule learning such as faulty generalization, incomplete application of rules and failure to learn condition under which rules apply. Because of those, the researcher suggest that the students should learn hard and practice more whether in the classes or out of the classes because learning English basically is practice and the teachers provide proper teaching materials and method because they are one of the instrument which can reduce the error.
