Sherlock Holmes’s personality in a study in scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. surabaya: english education department, faculty of languageand science, wijayakusuma university.advisor - i : dr. rida wahyuningrum, m.pd., advisor – ii : dra. lusy tunik muharlisiani, m.pd. keywords : personality, freudian psychoanalysis, a study in scarlet this isa descriptive - qualitative study focusing on extrinsic analysis upon sherlock holmes’ personality using freudian psychoanalysis. the aim of the study is find the personality possessed by sherlock holmes and its impact on himself and the people around him. freudian psychoanalysis reveals individual’s personality by referring to the tripartie called id, ego, and superego. the results of the study showed that sherlock holmes’ personality comprised three important traits: eccentric, hard-working and arrogant. sherlock holmes’ personality was much influenced by the encouragement of his id. however, his superego can almost control his ego very well. for example, he is someone who prefers to work in the way of justice and does not expect compensation for the case he is handling. he is also someone who has a high social spirit and responsibility. but he will forget all knowledge that is not related to his work and choose not to care about it. furthermore, this kind of personality caused some people around him to feel that he was someone who was annoying and that even they felt sherlock holmes' personality did not suit them.
