Abstract

Motivating EFL students to develop in the target language is quite complex and challenging issues that teachers face, especially in Indonesia. Given the fact that teachers are not only expected to deliver materials but also motivate students so they can become motivated in learning. Motivational strategies are defined as motivational influences that are intentionally executed in order to result in a certain systematic and permanent positive effect in L2 learning (Dörnyei 2001). This study investigates what kinds of motivational strategies being applied in EFL classrooms by Real Teaching students of UWKS English Department at SMA Hang Tuah 4 Surabaya. This study used a descriptive qualitative research methodology. To reach the aim of this study, some of the main subjects, topics, and points which can be related to the goal of the study are introduced and explained. The data were collected from observational checklist and interviews with Real Teaching students. The findings of this study showed that Real Teaching students agreed that that creating and maintaining relationships was a highly important strategy to motivate students in an EFL classroom. The study also found that by being aware of motivational strategies in EFL classrooms, teachers or future teachers can improve students’ motivation in learning by creating, generating, maintaining and building on motivation.
