Supeno,M.Hum,M.pd This thesis concern in the sociolinguistics field, especially in Taboo language in which the researcher is largely interested in studying Basuki Tjahaja Purnama’s language performance as a Governor of Jakarta. This research attempted to describe the types of taboo words and the purposes of the use taboo words in his language performance. This thesis takes a topic of Taboo words by using theory of Ronald Wardhaugh. In conducting his research, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative method in analyze the data, as well as he himself is as the instrument of his research. The researcher only analyzed the data which consist of Taboo words inside and omitted the other data. In this way, the researcher first identified the types of Taboo words used by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama and classified them based on Wardhaugh’s theory of Taboo words types. Furthermore, the researcher also analyzed the purposes of Taboo words which used by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. By doing so, the researcher eventually found out that there were some types of Taboo words which used by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. They are mother in law term, death term, excretion term, bodily function, religious matter, animal names, racism term and insulting references to perceived psychological, physical or social deviation. While the purposes of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama used Taboo words are to discredit, provoke, create identity and provide catharsis. Keywords: Sociolinguistics, Taboo words, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama.
