Abstract

Inflamasi gingiva merupakan peradangan jaringan gusi yang sering dipengaruhi oleh kebiasaan merokok. Zat toksik dalam rokok, seperti nikotin dan tar, dapat mengganggu aliran darah serta menurunkan respons imun jaringan gingiva. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh kebiasaan merokok terhadap derajat inflamasi gingiva pada sekuriti Universitas Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya. Penelitian menggunakan desain observasional analitik dengan pendekatan cross-sectional. Sebanyak 35 responden dipilih melalui metode total sampling. Data kebiasaan merokok diperoleh melalui wawancara, sedangkan derajat inflamasi gingiva dinilai melalui pemeriksaan klinis. Analisis data dilakukan menggunakan uji Chi-Square. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya hubungan yang signifikan antara frekuensi merokok dan derajat inflamasi gingiva (p=0,027). Perokok ringan cenderung mengalami inflamasi ringan hingga sedang, sedangkan perokok berat lebih banyak mengalami inflamasi berat. Kesimpulan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa semakin tinggi frekuensi merokok, semakin berat derajat inflamasi gingiva. Merokok merupakan faktor risiko penting terhadap kesehatan jaringan gingiva dan kesehatan mulut secara umum. Kata kunci: merokok, inflamasi gingiva, kesehatan mulut, sekuriti ABSTRACT Gingival inflammation is a common inflammatory condition of the gingival tissue that is frequently associated with smoking habits. Toxic substances in cigarettes, such as nicotine and tar, can impair blood circulation and reduce local immune responses in gingival tissue. This study aimed to determine the effect of smoking habits on the severity of gingival inflammation among security officers at Universitas Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya. An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 35 respondents selected through total sampling. Smoking habits were assessed through structured interviews, while the degree of gingival inflammation was evaluated through clinical examination. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed a significant relationship between smoking frequency and the severity of gingival inflammation (p = 0.027). Light smokers predominantly experienced mild to moderate gingival inflammation, whereas severe inflammation was more common among heavy smokers. In conclusion, a higher frequency of smoking is associated with increased severity of gingival inflammation. Smoking is an important risk factor affecting gingival tissue health and overall oral health. Keywords: smoking, gingival inflammation, oral health, security officer
