Abstract
This research analyzes the use of slang in the Harry Potter movie series, focusing on identifying the types of slang and how the characters use them to express their wants. The study is grounded in the classification theory of slang by Allan and Burridge (2006), which divides slang into five types: fresh and creative, imitative, acronym, clipping, and coinage. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data taken from character dialogues in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The utterances were transcribed, categorized, and analyzed based on their type and pragmatic function. The researcher found 40 slang expressions: 12 fresh and creative, 18 imitative, 5 clipping, 5 coinage, and 0 acronym. The results indicate that slang in fantasy movies is not genre-dependent but function-dependent. Slang is used by characters to express emotions, build relationships, convey attitude, and strengthen identity despite the fictional setting. This study contributes to sociolinguistics by showing how real-world informal language operates meaningfully within fantasy narratives, making them socially rich and pragmatically expressive.
