Abstract

ABSTARCT Erlin Eka Novianti. 2018. Slang Terms in Ride Along, The Movie Thesis Wijaya Kusuma University, Language and Science Faculty English Department. The First Advisor : Dr. Ribut Sujowati, S.Pd, M.Pd The Second Advisor : Dra. Bekti Wirawati, M.Pd This study aims to find out the slang terms used by the main character in Ride Along movie. There are three objects of this study, the first is to identify the types of slang formulated by Eric Partridge those are: cockney slang, public house slang, workmen’s slang, tradesmen’s slang, slang in art, slang in publicity , slang in public school and university , society slang, slang in commerce , and soldier’s slang. The second is to identify the effect of slang proposed by Swanson and Golden those are: negative effect and positive effect. The third is to identify the function of slang formulated by Yanchun and Yanhong those are: pursuit of self-identity, to express emotive feeling of the slang users and to achieve politeness. This study is a descriptive qualitative research. The data source of this study were Ride Along movie. The data of this study were slang word consist in the film of Ride Along movie. In this movie , the writer found 102 slang words and it was reduced into 15 data utterances by the main characters. The rsearch instrument was the writer herself. The writer did observation, give coding to collect the data. The writer also did some steps to analyze the data, namely: reducing, classifying, displaying, analyzing, and conclution. The results of the research show three points. First, all the three types of slang words (eleven society slang, two public house slang and two slang in publicity). Second, all the two effects of slang words ( fourteen negative effect and one positive effect). Third, all the three functions of slang words (eleven to show emotive feeling the users, one to achieve politeness, three to pursuit of self identity).
