Abstract

Skripsi, Program Studi Pendidikan Dokter, Fakultas Kedokteranm Universitas Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya. Pembimbing: Inawati Acute diarrhea (AD) is still the second contributing disease to morbidity and mortality in children universally, especially in children in the less developed country group. Probiotics have been proposed as extra therapies to improve the cure of diarrheal diseases. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of probiotic administration on acute diarrhea due to infection, especially in the type of probiotics, duration of diarrhea, symptoms, and hospitalization,. This research method uses literature studies through Google Scholar, PubMed NCBI, Cochrane Library, and Science Direct searches from 2011 to 2022, without language restrictions, and full text research journals. Data were obtained from twenty research journals (2,871 participants, 1 month – 14 years) that met the inclusion criteria. Result showed that the most probiotics used were types of bacteria and fungi with strains lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Saccharomyces boulardii. The results of the analysis showed that probiotics had an effect in reducing the duration of acute diarrhea due to infection; no significant and meaningful effect of probiotics on the duration of symptoms of fever and vomiting; and there is a significant effect of probiotics on the duration of hospitalization of acute diarrhea due to infection. It can be concluded that there is an influence of probiotics on acute diarrhea due to infection which is quite significant in the comparison of the reduction in the duration of diarrhea and the duration of hospitalization regardless of the influence of the type, dose, and concentration of probiotics given. However, further research needs to be done regarding the specific type of probiotic and side effects caused. Keywords : Probiotic, Acute Diarrhea due to Infection
