Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the cause of backward-bending supply and the behavior of farming in paddy-secondary crop farmers as the actors of backward-bending in Sepanyul village, Gudo district, Jombang regency, East Java province. Backward bending supply implies the existence of a negative relationship between the wages and working hours, that is the increase of wage is responded with decrease of working hours offered. Purposively, research location is selected in Sepanyul village because the village is a village where the paddy-secondary crop farmers are the actors of backward bending supply. The analysis method used in this study is the stages of data collection, data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. Data obtained by using in-depth interview technique of three respondents consisting of a paddy-secondary crop smallholder, a paddy-secondary crop farmer with medium land area and a paddy-secondary crop wide-landowner. The result of the analysis is that the backward bending supply is caused because the paddy-secondary crop farmers are subsistence farmers in paddy farming or behave as a producer and also as a consumer. The behavior of subsistence farmers is based on the principle of safety first (survival priority) and risk-averse. The behavior of the smallholder, farmer with medium land area and wide- landowner in farming is based on the knowledge obtained from their parents, personal experience and agricultural extension with the same cultivation techniques of paddy-secondary crop and maize. The labor demand behavior reflected in working hours on farming activities either on the smallholders, farmer with medium land area and wide landowner is only played by the head of family. There is no patron-client relationship between wide-landowner and their workers. There is selfexploitation or maximize energy they have for activities in farming in smallholder and the farmer with medium land area, but didn’t occur in wide landowner family.
