ABSTRAK Fiqi, Salsa Ashifa’ati, 2022, “Improving Reading Comprehension by Using Short Stories for Grade VIII D Students of SMPN 22 Surabaya” “Skripsi, Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Wijaya Kusuma. Kata Kunci:Pemahaman Membaca, Cerpen, Teks Recount Penelitian ini tentang peningkatan pemahaman membaca dengan menggunakan cerita pendek di SMP kelas VIII. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah penggunaan cerita pendek dapat meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 36 siswa (15 laki-laki dan 21 perempuan) kelas VIII D SMPN 22 Surabaya. Penelitian ini menggunakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas dan data diambil dari observasi dan tes. Desain penelitian tindakan kelas yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas kolaboratif. Oleh karena itu, guru bahasa Inggris sebagai pengamat dan kolaborator dan peneliti sebagai guru. Hasil penelitian, setelah diajarkan menggunakan cerpen terjadi peningkatan pemahaman membaca siswa. Para siswa mendapat nilai bagus secara bertahap pada siklus kedua. Pada siklus I, 22% siswa masih mendapat nilai di bawah KKM. Setelah dilakukan siklus II terjadi peningkatan menjadi 88% siswa yang memperoleh nilai diatas KKM. Oleh karena itu, tidak diperlukan siklus lagi dan siklus kedua ditutup. Kesimpulannya, cerita pendek dapat meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa dan pemahaman siswa tentang konteks teks. Key word: Reading Comprehension, Short Story, Recount Text This research was about improving reading comprehension by using short stories in Junior High School grade VIII. This research aimed to find whether the use of short stories can improve the students’ reading comprehension. The subjects of this research were 36 students (15 boys and 21 girls) of SMPN 22 Surabaya Grade VIII class D. This research used Classroom Action Research and the data taken from observations and and tests. The classroom action research design used in this research was collaborative classroom action research. Therefore, the English teacher was as observer and collaborator and the researcher as teacher. The results of the research, after being taught using short stories there was an improvement in students' reading comprehension. The students got good grades gradually in the second cycle. In the first cycle, 22% of students still got scores below the KKM. After the second cycle was carried out, there was an increase to 88% of students who scored above the KKM. Therefore, no more cycles were needed and the second cycle was closed. In conclusion, short stories can improve students' reading comprehension and students' understanding of the context of the text.
