Abstract

The paving block is a building material made of a mixture of portland cement, water, fine aggregates, coarse aggregates and with other raw materials that do not reduce the quality of concrete as an optional mixture. In this study, the paving blocks are using light brick waste as a combination mixture with sand. The waste is made of pieces or remnants of light brick fragments from wall construction thus becoming community-based trash, non-recyclable and unsellable. The study aims to determine the effect of adding light brick waste as a mixture for making paving blocks, using the ratio of cement and sand referring to the ACI Committee, which are 1PC: 2PS, 1PC: 3PS and 1PC: 4PS along with light brick waste of 0%, 3%, and 6% to the weight of sand for each mixture. The size of the paving block specimen is 20cm x 10cm x 6cm. The making of paving block specimen uses manual methods and the compaction is carried out by beating. The highest compressive strength value was obtained by paving block 3% light brick waste on a mixture of 1PC:2PS with an average compressive strength value of 22.33 MPa, the strength value is 18.56% lower than paving block 0% light brick waste, its higher 16% and 18.80% respectively than paving block mixture 1PC:3PS and 1PC:4PS. Paving block compressive strength value of 3% light brick waste with a mixture of 1PC:2PS including class B classification, a mixture of 1 PC:3PS and 1PC:4PS belongs to class C. The lowest water absorption test result was obtained on a mixture of 1PC:2PS with a water absorption value of 3.36% lower by about 0.61% than the mixture of 1PC:3PS, and lower by 0.84% than the mixture of 1PC:4PS. This shows that the higher the water absorption value in the paving block, the lower the resulting compressive strength value.
