Abstract

ABSTRACT COVID-19 is an RNA virus, with a distinctive crown-like appearance under the electron microscope due to the presence of glycoprotein spikes on its surface. The characteristic of COVID-19 is an increase in the production of a cytokine called a cytokine storm or cytokine storm which can cause a systemic inflammatory response in the short term. The purpose of this study was to determine cytokine levels in COVID-19 patients with a history of comorbidities. The research method used is Literature Review with a systematic review method. The study was carried out from various literatures sourced from national and international journals obtained from Google Scholar, Publish or Perish, PMC and PubMed. The results showed that the effect of cytokine levels on comorbidities exposed to COVID-19 was one of the factors that played an important role, cytokines were the main cause of death due to excessive inflammatory response triggered by viral infection. From the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that the levels of cytokines in COVID-19 patients with a history of comorbidities, namely an increase, especially the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 or anti-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-10. Future researchers can continue to update regarding the development of COVID-19 through research and literature such as risk factors or mechanisms for the occurrence of cytokine storms in patients with or without comorbidities and can find solutions to overcome the worsening prognosis.
